Looking for simple ways to clean your kitchen without the harsh chemicals or the supermarket price tags?

This week I shared 5 low tox kitchen cleaning hacks - tried-and-tested tips that’ll have your kitchen sparkling, naturally.

They’re easy, affordable and use ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. I’ve also included my two favourite DIY cleaning sprays that I use every week in my own kitchen.

Whether you're just starting your low tox cleaning journey or looking to refresh your routine, these simple swaps are a great place to start.

✨ Day 1: Sink Sparkle Hack

Ever wonder how to get your sink sparkling clean without harsh chemicals?

Day 1 of my low tox kitchen cleaning hacks is all about bringing your sink back to life with just a few everyday ingredients. No bleach, no nasties - just a natural fizz that cuts through grime and leaves your sink fresh and shiny.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the sink

  2. Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid

  3. Drizzle with white vinegar

  4. Scrub and rinse with warm water

💨 Day 2: Rangehood Rescue

When was the last time you cleaned your rangehood filter?
This one’s oddly satisfying - and incredibly effective.

Built-up grease on your rangehood filters doesn’t just look bad, it can affect performance. This natural soak breaks it down with minimal effort.

What you’ll need:

  • A large tray or sink of boiling water

  • ½ cup washing soda

  • A few drops of dishwashing liquid

Soak the filter for 30 minutes, then rinse with hot water and let it dry on a dish rack. You’ll be amazed at the difference!

🧊 Day 3: Fridge Refresh + DIY Vanilla Fridge Spray

Time to give your fridge a fresh start - and make your own vanilla-scented low tox spray while you’re at it.

Remove items shelf by shelf, then spray and wipe using a damp microfibre cloth. Dry with a lint-free cloth. Check expiry dates and toss anything past its prime.

🧴 DIY Vanilla Fridge Spray

  • 1 cup water

  • ¼ cup white vinegar

  • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract

Combine in a spray bottle and shake well.
Use with a damp cloth to clean shelves and drawers.

This low tox fridge spray cuts through residue and leaves your fridge smelling clean - without synthetic fragrances.

Bonus tip: This is a great time to rescue sad veggies or forgotten jars hiding at the back.

🗂️ Day 4: Pantry Power-Up + DIY Low Tox Bench Spray

You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect pantry to feel organised - you just need a bit of structure and a simple wipe down.

What to do:
✨ Group like items (tins, sauces, baking)
✨ Toss anything expired
✨ Wipe shelves with a cloth and your choice of homemade spray

🧴 DIY Low Tox Bench Spray

  • 300ml glass spray bottle

  • 1–2 tablespoons low tox dishwashing liquid (I used dōTERRA On Guard Cleaner Concentrate)

  • 6 drops lemon or orange essential oil (optional)

  • Top up with water

Spray and wipe with a damp microfibre cloth. Great for benches, tables and cupboards!

NB:  Glass spray bottle is only required if you are using essential oils.  If not, a plastic bottle is fine.

🍋 Day 5: Dishwasher Detox

A fresh, citrusy finish to the week!
Your dishwasher might be doing the cleaning - but it needs cleaning too.

Here’s how I detox mine:

  1. Pour 1 cup white vinegar into a small bowl

  2. Add a few drops of lemon or orange essential oil (optional)

  3. Place the bowl in the top rack of your empty dishwasher

  4. Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda in the base

  5. Add 1 tablespoon of washing soda to the soap dispenser

  6. Run the hottest cycle available

  7. After the cycle, remove the filter (strainer at the base) and wash it in hot soapy water

You’ll notice a fresher smell and better performance instantly.
