Ingredients
- 8 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced into 1cm sized pieces
- ¼ cup caster sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- 2 cups rolled oats
- ⅔ cup desiccated coconut
- ⅔ cup raw sugar
- ⅔ cup plain flour
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 250g unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Prep the apples: In the bowl of your slow cooker, combine the sliced apples, caster sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix well so the apples are evenly coated.
- Make the crumble: In a large mixing bowl, stir together the oats, coconut, raw sugar, flour and cinnamon. Pour in the melted butter and mix until everything is coated and clumpy.
- Assemble: Spoon the crumble mixture evenly over the apple mixture in the slow cooker.
- Cook: Cover and cook on HIGH for 2.5 hours, then remove the lid and cook for a further 30 minutes to allow the topping to crisp up slightly.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or custard. Enjoy!
Notes
Tips & Variations
- Make it gluten-free: Use gluten-free plain flour and quinoa flakes instead of oats.
- No coconut? You can swap the coconut for extra oats or chopped walnuts for a nuttier crunch.
- Less sugar: Reduce the sugar in the crumble to ½ cup if you prefer a less sweet dessert.
- Make-ahead: Prep everything earlier in the day and start cooking 3 hours before dessert time. Add a squeeze of lemon juice to the apples.
- Apple options: Granny Smiths are perfect for tart-sweet contrast, but Pink Lady will also work well.
