FAQ’s:
Can I freeze homemade waffles?
Yes! Let them cool completely, then freeze in an airtight container or wrap them individually in Glad Wrap. Reheat in the toaster.
Why are my waffles not crispy?
Your waffle maker may not be hot enough or the waffles may be sitting on a plate instead of a rack.
Can I make the batter ahead of time?
It’s best made fresh, but you can mix dry and wet separately and combine just before cooking.

Ingredients
- 2 cups plain flour
- 2 heaped teaspoons baking powder
- Pinch salt
- 2 heaped tablespoons caster sugar
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 2 eggs
- 50g unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat your waffle maker to your preferred setting.
- In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour and baking powder. Add the salt and sugar, then whisk to combine.
- In a separate jug, whisk together the milk, vanilla extract, egg, and melted butter.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk until just combined - avoid overmixing.
- Lightly grease the waffle maker with melted butter or vegetable oil.
- Using a ⅓ or ½ cup measure, scoop the batter onto the hot waffle maker and close the lid. Cook for approximately 3 minutes each side or until golden brown and lightly crisp.
- Transfer cooked waffles to a cooling rack while you cook the remaining batter.
- Serve warm with your favourite toppings, fresh fruit and yoghurt. Enjoy!
Notes
- Prep ahead: Mix the dry ingredients the night before and store them in an airtight container for a quick and easy breakfast.
- Freeze for later: Make a double batch and freeze the extras - simply reheat in the toaster, oven or air fryer for a crispy, fuss-free breakfast.
- Avoid overmixing: Stir the batter until just combined to keep your waffles light and fluffy. Overmixing can make them dense.
- Keep waffles warm: Place cooked waffles on a wire rack in a low oven (about 90°C) to keep them crisp while you finish the batch.
- Experiment with flavours: Try adding a teaspoon of cinnamon, a handful of chocolate chips, frozen berries.
